Your Teacher: Mark Feldman

Hey Everyone! My name is Mark and I’ve been playing drums professionally for more than 30 years.

I’ve written articles for Modern Drummer Magazine, and played on recordings for labels like A&M Records. I’ve also played with artists like Alison Krauss, Big Brother and The Holding Company, Letterman bassist Will Lee, fusion guitar god Oz Noy, and many others.

I was even chosen by Neil Peart–the legendary drummer from Rush–as one of the winners of Modern Drummer magazine’s very first drum solo contest!
Since 2009, I’ve taught hundreds of beginners to sound like real drummers even when they thought they were limited in some way—perhaps they thought they had no talent or were too old or maybe others told them that they couldn’t do it.

But I’m here to tell you that all of that is nonsense. It doesn’t matter what your age is and it doesn’t matter if you think you have no talent.

All that matters is that you want to learn. If that sounds like you, then you’ve come to the right place.

Why Play Drums? Well, Imagine this...

You come home from work. It’s been a tough day. You want to get into that meditative, flow state where all your troubles melt away, so you go sit down behind your practice pad (or electronic drums or drum set—it doesn’t matter which).

You start to play and you begin to relax. Your stress melts away and you’ve become calm yet simultaneously energized. After a while, you look up at the clock and you discover you’ve been playing drums for more than 90 minutes! You get up and go about your evening; only now you’re much calmer and happier than when you got home from the job.

This is just one of the things that drumming will do for you. It’ll make you feel great!

But that’s not all.

If you have dreams about being a drummer…like

playing in bands, meeting your drumming heroes, becoming a studio drummer, going on tour, or even something more modest like playing in your favorite local band or enjoying playing on your own…

this course can be that very first step you take.

What are you waiting for? The joyous feelings of calm and confident happiness await you…

Why Don't You Take That First Step?

Here's What Our Students Say...

best drum class I've ever been to

Best drum class I’ve ever been to. I’ve been to a rip-off class before where they only let you play along with songs to feel cool but actually learning nothing. My instructor is extremely professional and patient. I played in a band before but I was still surprised by how many fundamentals I didn’t know. He really taught me the skills I needed to go a long way with my drumming. I highly recommend this class!  –Gavin Li

a terrific introduction to playing the drums...

The Absolute Beginners Class provided a terrific introduction to playing the drums. The course book has been a great tool to keep learning and improving. I sometimes even start to sound like a drummer myself! –Andrew Irving

trying something new can be very intimidating, but...

Trying something new at a not-so-young age can be very intimidating, especially if you have NO skills whatsoever. The beginner group’s 2-hour lessons were a great way to convince me to practice and keep moving forward. Only good things from BANG! The Drum School!  –Karen Ruff

If you're on the fence about whether to take this class...

If you’re on the fence about whether to take this class or not, this is me pushing you to the “hell yeah!” side. The grass is definitely greener there.  –Caroline Castro

I was surprised at how quickly everyone picked things up...

Over the course of 4 weeks you learn all the basic techniques you need to get a really solid foundation to go on and pursue your personal drumming practice. Mark Feldman is an incredible teacher and makes each class fun and relaxed while teaching you everything you need/want to know about drumming for beginners. I was surprised at how quickly everyone picked things up — he had us all playing basic rock beats our first class! Definitely a MUST if you are considering learning how to play the drums. Cannot recommend it enough.  –Alana Barnes

The 3 Most Frequently Asked Questions...Answered with Video

Frequently Asked Questions

Don't I Need a Drum Set To Begin Learning?

You do not need to own a drum set in order to begin to learn how to play the drums. The only thing you need to get started is a practice pad and a pair of sticks. There is a huge amount of progress in your drumming learning you can make with just a practice pad. You can learn to read music, work on technique, learn independence and work on learning songs—all with just a practice pad.

Of course, it is important to get a drum set eventually, but you don’t have to wait to begin learning; a practice pad can absolutely get you started.

By the way, when you sign up for the class, I’ll make sure to tell you what my favorite pad and favorite sticks are so you don’t have to waste time figuring that out.

Am I Too Old To Learn To Play Drums?

Probably not.

The necessity of beginning to learn music at a very young age is a common belief that is absolutely incorrect. Learning to play music–drums included–has long been incorrectly perceived as a “young person’s game.”

And while younger students may have some advantages due to neuroplasticity, or dexterity, it’s simply not true that you can’t do it as an adult. More and more, people are taking up instruments later in life with satisfying results.

There is also a great deal of research that shows the psychological benefits to learning music as an adult.

Don't I Need Talent To Play The Drums Well?

No. Another myth about learning the drums is that you need natural talent to be successful. This is incorrect despite being a pervasive belief. The idea of talent being necessary is so ingrained in some musicians that if you publicly speak about the reality that talent is a fairy tale, a backlash of criticism may result. I’ve been attacked for debunking this myth, but I persist regardless because science backs me up on this. There are many places to read about it including The Talent Code by Daniel Coyle and Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell.
